Akemi Yamafuku

Akemi Yamafuku was born in 1963 in a printing house in Fukuoka, Japan. She moved to Tokyo when she was eighteen to become and actress but instead discovered that her real vocation was illustration, design and craftwork. In 2004 she started making wood-block prints and found that printing was the perfect media for expressing herself as a storyteller. In 2005 Kakūsha published her first picture book, “Sabaku no machi to safuronzake" (A Desert Town and Saffron Liquor), which illustrates a story written by Mimei Ogawa. In 2007 her first picture book in which she is also author of the text, “Yamaneko mōfu" (The Wildcat’s Blanket), was published by Parolsha.

Arthur Binard

Arthur Binard was born in 1967 in Michigan (USA). He studied English literature at Colgate University, and after graduation, an interest in the ideogram led him to Japan where he writes in both English and Japanese. His first book of poems in Japanese, “Tsuriagetewa,” was awarded the Nakahara Chūya Prize in 2001. The following year, the collection was published in English under the title “Catch and Release.” Binard won the Japan Picture Book Prize in 2007 for “Home is Here” (Koko ga ie da), his retelling of the story of the Lucky Dragon, a Japanese fishing vessel whose twenty-three crew members were exposed to radiation from a hydrogen bomb test in the South Pacific. Binard’s English translations of the popular Family of Fourteen picture-book series are available from Doshinsha Publishers.

Ayuko Tanaka was born in 1972 in Japan. She graduated from Fukushima University and Tokyo Designer's Art College. She lives and works in Tokyo where she is director at Picografika (Sayula Technology Japan), an electronic publishing label specializing in artistic Apps. She has illustrated a number of picture books such as “Marūshika to jūnikagetsu” (Marushka and the Twelve Months) and “Haritsukuri no hanamuko-san” (The Needle-maker Groom), both published by Kodansha. She also writes the texts for her own picture books.

Dávid Ursiny

Dávid Ursiny was born in 1978 in Bratislava, Slovakia. He studied illustration (prof. Dušan Kállay) at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. His first illustrated book was "Bhagavadgita", published by Petrus in 2004. This first experience as ‘commentator’ of the text strongly influenced his thoughts on art. He was one of eight artists that took part in the illustrated Arabian Nights project published by Ikar in collaboration with Euromedia (Czech Republic). He has also illustrated a collection of Slovak fairy tales and a three language edition of N. Roerich’s poems, "Flame in Chalice".

Erie Sonoda

Erie Sonoda was born in 1981. She majored Architecture at university and then studied Graphic Design. In 2007 she was one of the selected artists for the Illustrators Exhibition (Bologna Children's Book Fair). In 2009 she published her first picture book, "Service de Nuit” (Night Shift) at Lirabelle, a French publisher. Her latest picture book is called "Kowakunai mon” (I'm not Scared!) published by Enbooks in Japan. She uses pencil and watercolor for her illustrations.
